As winter looms and roads are being deiced, know that Ohio Community Rights Network has submitted a letter to Governor DeWine and the State of Ohio Legislature opposing the use of fracking brine as road deicer. The letter was cosigned by 19 organizations including Ohio Community Rights Network, Columbus Community Bill of Rights, NEOGAP, FreshWater Accountability Project, Radioactive Waste Alert, Between the Waters, Kent State Future Environmental Professionals Club, Ashtabula County NAACP, Fractracker, Sustainable Medina County, UU Justice Ohio, Williams County Alliance, CROW (Citizens for Rights of the Ohio River Watershed), Ohio Peace Council Committee for Youngstown Community Bill of Rights, Frackfree Mahoning, Valley Guardians of Mill Creek Park, Sustainable Youngstown. The letter expressed our demand for an immediate and complete ban of the use of brine from oil and gas extraction operations (O&G brine) as a road deicer and dust suppressant. It upholds Ohio State Representative Mary Lightbody of District 4 House Bill 579, Prohibit road surface application -brine from oil and gas wells, which would accomplish this.
